An article in the Wall Street Journal on Sunday said that Alphabet Inc., the company that owns Google, is about to make its biggest purchase ever: it will pay about $23 billion to buy the cybersecurity startup Wiz.
Sources close to the situation told the Journal that Alphabet was in advanced talks and that a deal could be made soon if the talks don’t break down.
Alphabet and Wiz did not respond right away to requests for comment on Sunday.
The Journal said that Wiz’s security software for cloud computing could give Alphabet’s growing cloud-computing business a big boost.
Wiz, a company based in New York, raised $1 billion in funding in May at a valuation of $12 billion. This brought the total amount of money it has raised to $1.9 billion.
Motorola Mobility, which it bought for $12.5 billion in 2011, was the biggest company Google has bought so far.
Google’s Class A shares (GOOG, -0.27%) and Class C shares (GOOG, -0.28%) are both up about 32% so far this year.
