TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, August 13, 2026 \/EINPresswire.com<\/a>\/ — My Mulan, the original Canadian inspirational fantasy dance drama, concluded its eighth season with three performances from August 7\u20139 at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre<\/a> in Niagara, Ontario.<\/p>\n

Created and premiered in Canada in 2019, My Mulan has now completed eight seasons and 26 professional theatre performances. Over the years, the production has received continued recognition and support from elected officials at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels in Canada, including former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as from the Consulate General of the People\u2019s Republic of China in Toronto and multicultural community arts leaders, all of whom have recognized the work for its contemporary relevance and multicultural impact.<\/p>\n

Rather than simply retelling a familiar legend, My Mulan reimagines the story of Hua Mulan through a contemporary lens by connecting her journey with Michelle, a young woman of today searching for her own path. Through a multidisciplinary stage language that blends Chinese dance, contemporary dance, ballet, hip-hop, martial arts, theatre, original music, and multimedia, the production explores universal themes of love, courage, responsibility, faith, and identity.<\/p>\n

Season Eight marked a new stage in the work\u2019s artistic development. Under the direction of Chief Director Lin Li, the production introduced new choreography and refined existing dance sequences, while also updating lighting, video backgrounds, and surtitles to strengthen the visual storytelling and emotional clarity of the piece. These changes created a more cohesive theatrical experience and made the story more accessible to audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds.<\/p>\n

Jane Jingzhu Li, Artistic Advisor of My Mulan and representative of co-presenter Niagara Centre for Arts, said:\u201cMy Mulan brings together Eastern and Western artistic elements through the stories of Michelle and Mulan, sharing the power of love, courage, and faith. A notable highlight of the opening reception was the attendance and remarks of Lesley Greene, Councillor of Six Nations. Her presence brought meaningful Indigenous and local cultural resonance to the occasion, further underscoring My Mulan\u2019s growing inclusivity and commitment to cross-cultural dialogue.<\/p>\n

Audience response to the eighth season reflected the production\u2019s continued growth. Returning audience member Daisy Gao wrote after the performance, \u201cMy Mulan continues to improve every year, and it still surprises me.\u201d She added, \u201cMay we all be like Mulan\u2014soft at heart, yet sharp in strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

The production also welcomed Richard, a director with the Shaw Festival, who expressed strong appreciation for the performance and encouraged the creative team to consider bringing My Mulan to downtown Toronto in the future so that even broader audiences can experience this original Canadian dance drama.<\/p>\n

Over eight seasons, My Mulan has brought together artists and audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds. Its goal is not simply to present Chinese culture, but to create a contemporary artistic language through which audiences unfamiliar with The Ballad of Mulan or Chinese history can still connect with Mulan\u2019s love, choices, struggles, responsibility, and courage.<\/p>\n

With the close of its three Niagara performances, Season Eight has officially come to an end.
